Grill Maintenance


When the temperature outside begins to rise, our drive to stay inside lowers. No one wants to stay inside on a beautiful summer day, so why not roll out that gas or charcoal grill instead of slaving over a hot stove? But just because it’s more laid back to cook out, don’t get too comfortable.

Before you can become the grill master, you need to make sure that you take the proper precautions to avoid a grill disaster.


  • Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home or any other material that may flame up.
  • Be sure to open the lid of your gas grill before lighting it.
  • DO NOT use gasoline or kerosene as ignition fluid.
  • Store propane tanks away from direct heat and sunlight to avoid explosions.
  • By lightly coating the grate in your grill with a high temperature oil will prevent food from sticking to the grates before the food is placed on it. A non-stick cooking spray would work as well.


  • A mistake most people make with their charcoal grills is covering it completely to keep the fire lit. This is not the correct science. Once you have lit the charcoal and it begins to have grey edges, move the coals around. The air will hit the charcoals and heat up quicker. You should move the coals around from time to time in order to keep the heat distributed.
  • If you are using a charcoal grill, immediately discard the ashes when the grill is cooled. If you are using a gas or another type of grill, check the drip pan often and clean when necessary.
  • Grills clean best when they are warm. When the grill is cold, it is prone to stick on messes that will be difficult to remove. An easy tip to cleaning your grates would be to take a wire brush (brass brushes on stainless steel grates, stainless steel brushes on cast-iron) and scrub until the residue is gone. Or try taking an aluminum foil ball and placing it between a pair of tongs and do the same as you would with the wire brush. Both are effective.


  • If you use your grill in the summer, be sure to give it an annual cleaning. If you use your grill throughout the year, you will of course need to clean it more often.
  • Some have found that using a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water works well when sprayed into the interior of the grill, allowing it to set and eat away at the particles. You may then rid of the remaining by scrubbing and wiping clean.
  • When the grill is cooled, be sure to wipe the surface to get rid of any spills and avoid any accidental fires.
  • When not in use, cover your grill to protect it from any damages. If your grill is stored outside, you might want to consider a water-proof cover.
