Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE it. Looks like a spaceship. Cheap to operate. We've only had this installed for a week, and so far we love it. First thing you will notice is how substantial and high quality it is. Everything about it oozes high quality craftsmanship. This thing is built in the USA and I expect it to last. It replaces a 13 year old 75-gallon high-efficiency Bradford White commercial gas water tank. My father in law and I installed it ourselves, which included running 75ft of 10-3AWG wire, adding a new 30A breaker, installing and hooking up a new condensate pump to the drain, unhooking the old tank and connecting the new one and removing the old pipe and plugging the vent to the exterior wall. With some planning, the install is moderately easy. Running the new wire took the longest as we had to drill through about 20 joists. I have a smart electric meter on my home so I have monitored the electricity usage daily since install, and I can hardly believe it, but on average over the week we have only used an average of 1.5KWH per day more than before. That's around 22c per day, or under $7/mo. I have had it running on the most efficient "Heat Pump" mode the whole time. I'm in disbelief it is so efficient!! I haven't had my gas bill yet, but I'm expecting to save at least $30/mo on gas. If you currently have oil or propane, you will save much more. With the $400 local rebates (now jumped to $600!) and $300 federal tax credit, this water heater is no more expensive than a regular 80gal tank. It will pay for itself within around 3 years. Icing on the cake -- I was expecting this to be noisy, since it contains an evaporator coil like in a heat pump. But it's really pretty quiet! It's actually much quieter than our gas water heater it replaces that had a noisy fan to vent the exhaust gases to an exterior wall. It's in our basement and we can never hear it on the ground floor. We could hear the gas one when it fired up, especially when we were sitting in the room directly above it. Added bonus -- this cools our basement and reduces humidity. Over time, this will inhibit mold growth and freshen it up. We have a treadmill down there so it's good to know that when we're working out, we're helping heat our water :-) :-) :-) Some random install notes: This tank is HEAVY - 240lbs when EMPTY!! If you are taking it down a flight of stairs, have a heavy-duty hand-cart available, use strong straps around it and take your time. The unit is extremely top-heavy (the heat pump is on the top of the tank) so be careful about the whole thing rolling over down the stairs (that would be a bad day). We did it with 2 people, but it wouldn't hurt to have 3 just to be extra safe. If you are running wire -- I ran 10-3 thinking I needed a neutral wire. This water heater (like most/all? water tanks) do not have a neutral wire. So you can get away with 10-2 (that's 2 hot conductors and a ground wire). Would have saved me a few bucks, but no harm done. I got the Little Giant VCMX-20ULST 554550 VCMX Series Automatic Condensate Removal Pump With Safety Switch (115 volts), 1/30 horsepower as a condensate pump. It's overkill for this purpose but it's a fantastic little pump and whisper quiet. I actually used it to drain the old 75 gallon tank to the sewer line - a 10ft rise - and it took around 75 minutes total. Good way to put it through its paces before installing it! This tank is TALL - a good 12" taller than our old 75 gallon tank, so we had a bit more plumbing to do that we would have wanted. Plan for having to cut pipes, installing flexible stainless steel hoses and maybe also relocating a shutoff valve or two. Lastly, if you are new to doing this kind of install, plan the whole thing carefully. Understand exactly what parts you are going to need and the steps you will need to complete in order to get the tank installed. Otherwise you'll be running back and forth to the hardware store all day.. no fun.
