The toaster oven used to be a simple appliance whose function was limited to toasting a bagel or a few slices of bread. Over the years, through technological advancements, the toaster oven evolved into a versatile tool and an essential appliance in the kitchen. Today, it functions as a mini-oven, capable of roasting vegetables, baking a batch of cookies, roasting a piece of meat, and broiling a plate of nachos.
A toaster oven heats up much like a conventional oven. There are two metal coils on a toaster oven, one on the bottom and one on the top. When the toaster oven is on, those two coils heat up, changing electrical energy into heat energy, specifically infrared radiation.Although conventional ovens and toaster ovens work in much the same way, there are a few crucial differences between the two. Firstly, toaster ovens do not require installation. In contrast to a conventional oven, toaster ovens just need to be plugged into an outlet to work. Secondly, since toaster ovens are smaller than conventional ovens, they preheat much quicker and are more suitable for smaller-sized meals that can fit inside the appliance. Lastly, toaster ovens use less energy than conventional ovens because the space they need to heat up is considerably smaller than conventional ovens.
Toaster ovens are generally smaller than conventional ovens, but their total capacity varies from model to model. Choosing a model depends greatly on one's needs. Go for a toaster oven with a smaller total capacity if you're a college student or a bachelor who is usually cooking for one. Pick a toaster oven with a larger total capacity if you have a large family and are cooking for many. Toaster ovens also come in a variety of different colors/finishes depending on the brand and model, giving you plenty of choices to fit your kitchen.
Air-frying toaster ovens come equipped with a heating element and a powerful fan. When the toaster oven is on, the fan circulates hot air generated by the heating element, assuring food gets cooked evenly. It also makes the food extra crispy without deep-frying it. In general, most foods are air-fried at about 400 F.
Most toaster ovens also come equipped with a broiler. The broiling mode heats the top coil at an extremely high temperature, heating whichever side is facing upwards in the oven. The broiler setting is perfect for broiling cheese on top of nachos, chocolate, smores, meats, and more.
