Since 1947, Thermador has been one of the stalwart brands for luxury kitchen appliances. Aesthetically, their products haven’t been overly flashy, demurely blending into their surroundings. What they do, though, is work brilliantly well. So much so that the pre-eminent Julia Child depended on a Thermador oven in her critically acclaimed cooking show, The French Chef, during its decade-long run. In this post, we’ll take an in-depth look at a Thermador 3-piece kitchen package that consists of a front-control cooktop, a speed oven, and a dishwasher.
This 36-inch cooktop is from Thermador’s Professional Series. It features six of their patented star burners. The unique shape of these burners isn’t a mere stylistic choice. With perimeters that are 56% longer than conventional round burners, they can distribute flame to the bottom of cookware with unprecedented evenness and precision. The burners are also sealed for an even more exacting flame and easy cleaning.
Each burner can emit up to a scorching 18,000 BTUs, making them capable of boiling water 50% quicker than competing gas cooktops. Two burners, though, are able to make use of Thermador’s exclusive ExtraLow mode. This allows you to set the BTUs down to 375. That makes it possible to prepare the perfect roux as a base for a bechamel or velouté sauce without risk of burning.
The cooktop also sports unparalleled ergonomics that would make it right at home in a professional kitchen. Each burner can be controlled with complete subtlety through the easy-to-reach front-facing metal knobs. Continuous heavy-duty porcelain grates make it easy to slide around even the heaviest cast-iron skillets or soup pots. There’s also a griddle available that’s sold separately. You can use it in place of two of the cooktop grates to let your inner short order cook shine, preparing burgers or eggs and hash browns.
Hewing with their tradition of manufacturing top-of-the-line ovens, this 30-inch Thermador model, also from their Professional Series, is one of the most versatile in the market. It has a spacious 1.6 cu ft capacity and puts it to good use. The oven features every iteration of current oven technology with a 1000 watt microwave element, a 600 watt bake element, a 1750 watt broil element, and a 1700 watt true convection element.
You can certainly use the microwave and conventional oven functions independently. This unit will microwave the perfect bag of popcorn or reheat last night’s Mexican takeout for a second meal. You can just as handily use its bake function to whip up a batch of cookies. However, where this oven really shines is when it uses its microwave power in tandem with conventional heating in its combi modes.
There are three standard combi modes. Combi convection can be used for larger items such as casseroles, cobblers, and crumbles. Combi convection broil is ideal for roasted potatoes and vegetables. Combi broil is suggested for smaller pieces of meat like meatballs, chicken wings, and sausages. The combination of microwave and conventional cooking allows for cook times that are 30% faster than conventional cooking alone but for even, succulent results not possible with just microwaving.
Always intending to make your life easier in the kitchen, Thermador has packed this oven with a staggering 36 pre-set CookSmart settings. All of these are custom combi settings. From meat and poultry dishes like a whole Cornish game hen and a lamb roast, to fish dishes like tuna and halibut steaks, to side dishes like scalloped potatoes, to more complex entrees such as lasagna or quiche, to desserts like fruit cobblers and bread pudding, there’s a CookSmart setting for almost all traditional American recipes.
After a meal is done and you and your guests are ready for other pursuits, you needn’t worry about a tough cleanup. This slim, unobtrusive, fully integrated dishwasher from the Emerald Series is a cleaning powerhouse in a small package. It has space for up to 16 place settings. It also includes a “Chef’s Tool Drawer” for where awkwardly sized utensils such as carving knives, spatulas, or whisks.
The unit has six wash cycles for virtually any cleaning scenario. The normal cycle, as the name suggests, can be used for typical use to wash a full load of moderately soiled dishes. This cycle also has the option to choose an “Extra Dry” mode to sanitize 99.9% of bacteria. The hand wash cycle is best suited to fine china as utilizes a gentler clean at a lower temperature. The pots and pans cycle is a heavy duty one that eliminates baked-on food and grease. The auto cycle uses Thermador’s Sens-A-Wash which measures water cleanliness to monitor soil levels for maximum efficiency. Quick is for lightly soiled dishes and only lasts 30 minutes. All these can be preceded by a rinse cycle in case dishes require pre-rinsing.
This dishwasher is a smart appliance. If you connect it to a wi-fi network and download the Home Connect app to your smart device, you can use a phone or tablet to control the dishwasher. You’ll be able to adjust water temperature and pressure, change cycles, and even have Thermador customer service diagnose problems remotely.
