KitchenAid KHMS2040BSS Reviews & Ratings

KHMS2040BSS Architect Series II 30" Wide 2.0 cu. ft. Capacity, 1000 Watt Over the Range Microwave Oven, True 10-Level Power Control, Quick Defrost Cycle, Popcorn Sensor in Stainless Steel is rated 4.3048 out of 5 by 187.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fan sounds like it is grinding coffee beans Had read other reviews mentioning the fan being loud but bought anyway to get a matching set of appliances. It is very loud, like it is rubbing or grinding. Have called local service people to come take a look. Don't understand how they can make a super quiet dishwasher and then a microwave that is louder than the garbage disposal. Hopefully it will be resolved by the service man. Also while the microwave is slightly larger than our old one, the spinning glass plate is smaller. So larger items have a harder time fitting in. There is plenty of room for the plate to be bigger but it seems like they were trying to save money by making it smaller. It does stick out farther and is lower than our old microwave. Exhaust fan needs to be stronger. Of the 4 new appliances we bought, microwave, slide in range, dishwasher, fridge, this one is the weak link. Would not buy again unless trying to match appliances.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected I purchased this about a month ago and so far it is great. I will say that the vent fan on high is quite noisy. I have it vented out the roof. It is much louder than my older model which was essentially the same microwave but very slightly smaller and a lower CFM.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from High dollar Microwave We remodeled the kitchen and went all out on Kitchenaid appliances. The microwave is the biggest disappointment, It looks great, but does not perform as well as the GE countertop unit that we replaced and paid a third the price. In direct comparison, the Kitchenaid unit takes one, two, or even three minutes longer to heat frozen dinners and to steam vegetables than the GE. The beeper or tone that it made when we got it turned into a sick squeal about a month after we started using it. I have run all the tests to see if it is producing 1000 watts, and it will boil a cup of water in three minutes.... seems slow for a "high power" unit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TOO LOUD! AFTER THE UNIT WAS INSTALLED, OUR FIRST OBSERVATION WAS THAT THE FAN IN THE UNIT IS UNACCEPTABLY LOUD. MUCH LOUDER THAN THE GE PROFILE WHICH WAS REPLACED. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE NOISE IS DUE TO A SINGLE FAN OPERATING BOTH AS THE MAGNETRON COOLER AND EXHAUST HOOD. BOTH FUNCTIONS OPERATE SIMULTANIOUSLY, CREATING EXCESSIVE NOISE. ACCEPTABLE PRACTICE IS TO UTILIZE SMALLER LESS NOISY FAN FOR THE MAGNETRON. WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS UNIT AND WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT IF THIS WERE KNOWN AT THE TIME. IN ALL OTHER RESPECTS THE UNIT OPERATES VERY WELL BUT WE DON'T THINK KITCHENAID EXCELLENCE IS REFLECTED IN THIS UNIT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features This microwave does all the thinking for you. It senses how many baking potatoes you have put in to cook. The reheat feature also senses when something is done so there is no over cooking unless you manually select the cook time, then the error is on you. My only problem is the microwave must be taller in height than our old one. It is above our stove top and if I have a large pot on the stove, I must take care in removing the lid as it may touch the bottom of the microwave. One of the nice features is that when cooking on the stove top the microwave senses when things are getting hot and turns the fan on automatically.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looking Good I bought this microwave hood a couple of months ago as part of my kitchen refacing project and we wanted to go with stainless steel appliances. This model fit our space and looked a lot better that the 36 inch model that was available with the side panels. Overall It's worked well but and the issues my wife has with it are: 1 - Door handle get hot to the touch when you have other dishes cooking on the cooktop. 2 - The fan is pretty loud when you have it turned on Overall, it's ok but there are other microwave hoods out on the market that are less expensive and will do the job just fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Features I have this at my Condo and have now purchased a Duplex and repurchased all the same KA appl. Only problem is I got them at ABT Appliance in Glenview,Il. and it is different from the first. This new one does not have the Start and off buttons highlighted in white. I have all KA appl. in both Condo and Duplex. I called Abt re this and they said I was wrong. Personally I think KA made a run of these without the white highlighted buttons and sold them to ABT at a good deal. However, I did not get what I wanted and am having to live with whatever because ABT will not do anything about it even after I called KA and they said it should have the highlighted buttons. Otherwise it is a great product and looks good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nothing Special We purchased this microwave as part of an entire KitchenAid appliance upgrade for our newly remodeled kitchen. The features are about the same as most manufacturers in this price range, however, this model has a couple of irritations. The 10 year old Whirlpool Gold we replaced did not have an 'Off" button. When an operation finished, the unit reset itself, awaiting the next command for any follow-on function. This unit will stay in a wait mode where the only thing I can do is to add more time. Any other cooking operation requires the 'Off' button to be tapped. This makes no sense. Also, while this unit does have an add 30 second, one touch button, we miss the 1 through 4 minute one touch buttons on the Whirlpool

What exactly is an Extended Service Plan?
An extended service plan is generally an extension of your original manufacturer's warranty. Most manufacturers warranty their products to be free from defects for up to one year from the date of purchase. This warranty virtually guarantees you that if your newly purchased product fails, the manufacturer will protect you from the high costs of replacement parts and labor necessary to repair your product. Extended service plans lengthen your product's coverage for up to an additional 60 months (5 years) to insure you get years of performance satisfaction from your newly purchased product.
How is this different than the manufacturer's warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty usually offers limited coverage for a limited time, with parts and labor carrying separate lengths of coverage. For example, a common manufacturer warranty of a product might cover a consumer for one full year on parts defects but only 90 days on the high cost of labor involved to change those parts. Extended service plans provide comprehensive, long term, even length coverage. This means that should your product fail within your plans coverage time frame, both parts and labor costs are covegrey.
How do I buy an Extended Service Plan?
Extended Service Plans can be purchased along with your product online, or via our toll free number.
Can I renew my Consumer Priority Service extended service plan?
Yes, service plans are renewable and must be submitted 30 days prior to the original plans expiration. Please contact a sales representative to discuss your renewal options.
What should I do if I need extended service?
Our extended service providers offer an easy to use interactive form online which you may use to request that they initiate a claim on your product. Your other alternative is to call the toll-free number on your extended warranty card or email and have a qualified representative make this request for you with the information you will provide. We believe that our claim initiation request process is the absolute best our industry has to offer. It is designed for simplicity and speed.
Who will perform the service on my product?
Our company works with over 11,000 authorized service professionals. Each technician is extensively trained by the respective manufacturers to provide service on your products. Authorized technicians must complete annual and bi-annual continued education exams in addition to being well versed in manufacturer supplied update bulletins to ensure their level of expertise is as current as the new products which come to market. We urge our customers to provide feedback regarding their experiences which we later use to insure that the level of service we are expected to provide is exactly the level of service you receive.
May I transfer my extended service plan to another person?
Our service plans are 100% transferable. If you would like transfer ownership of the covegrey product along with its coverage, we require that the request be supplied in writing. For assistance please contact a Representative. Please have all of the new owner's information at hand when requesting a transfer.
Will I have to pay a deductible or any other "hidden costs"?
Generally, the amount of a deductible is almost always proportional to the amount of the premium charged. In order to have a lower deductible, even as low as $0, the plan holder would generally have to agree to a higher premium. For those who want lower premiums, they must agree to a higher deductible. Our extended service plans carry a $0.00 deductible along with low premiums. This means that with an extended service plan there are no high upfront costs and they are committed to cover 100% parts and labor costs on any authorized claim.
When does my warranty start?
Depending on the type of coverage you own, an extended warranty begins at the conclusion of the shortest portion of the manufacturer’s warranty. If the manufacturer’s warranty was 90 day labor and 1 year parts, the extended warranty would begin on the 91st day and continue for the duration of the warranty period. All replacement, commercial and accidental plans begin on the date of purchase.
Why does my plan say "under $1000"?
Some plans carry a dollar value on them. This means that your product's purchase price, excluding tax, delivery and accessories is below the listed price on the contract. It's simply a classification based on the price of purchase of the product under warranty.
What does an accidental plan cover?
If you have added Accidental Coverage to your plan, this plan shall cover unintentional damages as a result of: impact, liquid damage or unintentional physical damage. Accidental Coverage does not cover intentional damages of any kind to the covered product or losses due to theft. Accidental Coverage does not cover willful damage, misuse, damage due to neglect, drops over 6 feet, fire damage or full immersion in water.

Accidental Coverage does not cover damage caused by the use of a product in a way the manufacturer never intended. Coverage for this plan shall begin 30 days after the date of purchase of the covered product.
Is my service plan worldwide?
All plans carry a worldwide option at no additional charge. Contact a sales professional for further details.
Who do I contact with further questions?
Please contact a sales professional at 1-800-299-9470.
